Hon. Asot Michael Donates $50,000 to Cultural Icons

St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, August 6, 2024 – Independent Member of Parliament Hon. Asot Michael has donated $50,000 to two of the nation’s most esteemed cultural institutions – the Hellsgate Steel Orchestra and the original Burning Flames – and the 2024 Road March winner in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the annual Carnival celebrations.
The presentation of $15,000.00 to Hellsgate in memory of Carnival pioneer MAJURICE J. MICHAEL who built Carnival Bowl at Micheal’s Mount, came on Panorama Night 2024 after the 79-year-old musical giant won its 23rd Panorama title. The original Burning Flames – Toriano ‘Onyan’ Edwards, Clarence ‘Ounku’ Edwards, Rone ‘Foxx’ Watkins and David ‘Boobai Krokuss’ Edwards – received their $30,000.00 award at the Breakfast Fete. $5,000.00 was presented to the winner of the 2024 Road March PATRICK A. MICHAEL Memorial Trophy on Tuesday August 6th, 2024.
This substantial contribution underscores Hon. Michael’s commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Antigua and Barbuda.
“I am honored to support the Hellsgate Steel Orchestra and the original Burning Flames, two groups that have significantly shaped our Carnival and brought joy to countless people over the years,” stated Hon. Michael. “Their dedication, talent, and passion for our culture are truly inspiring, and it is my privilege to contribute to their continued success and longevity.”
The Hellsgate Steel Orchestra, founded in 1945, is the oldest steel band in the world and a cornerstone of Antigua and Barbuda’s musical heritage. Their innovative performances and dedication to the art of steelpan music have earned them international acclaim and a loyal following at home.
The original Burning Flames, formed in 1984, revolutionized the soca music scene with their energetic performances and infectious rhythms. Their influence on the Carnival experience in Antigua and Barbuda is immeasurable, having produced numerous hits that have become anthems of the festival.
Representatives from both groups expressed their profound gratitude for the donation. “This generous gift from Hon. Michael will help us to continue our mission of promoting and preserving steelpan music for future generations,” said a spokesperson for the Hellsgate Steel Orchestra. Similarly, a representative of the original Burning Flames remarked, “We are deeply thankful for this support, which will enable us to keep creating the music that defines our Carnival and brings our community together.”
Hon. Asot Michael’s donation is a testament to his enduring support for the arts and his recognition of the vital role that culture plays in the identity and unity of Antigua and Barbuda.
