SIR LESTER BRYANT BIRD, KNH [February 21st, 1938 to August 9th, 2021]
St John’s, Antigua, August 13th, 2021 – We, the family members of the late Patrick A Michael – Ambassador Josette Michael, Asot, Theresa-Anne and Soraya, extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of Sir Lester Bryant Bird KNH – Lady Patricia Bird; his children Donyelle, Rika, Jan, Kearon, Sabaena and Bryant; and other members of the Bird family.
The news of Sir Lester’s transition has touched my family emotionally. We are deeply saddened by the loss of this great son of our soil. My family can only image the tremendous loss that you and your family are experiencing at this time. I am sure that time will allow you and us all as Antiguans who knew him to come to terms with his passing, though no one, and nothing will fill that void that he has left in our lives and in our hearts.
We weep for the loss of our dear friend and honorary family member of the past 50 years. His death brings tears for the pieces of his caring heart and brilliant mind generously granted to us through the years that have blessed us beyond measure. We are indeed lucky to have shared so intimately in the life and times of such a wonderful human being. Indeed, there is comfort in knowing that while we mourn his loss among us mortals, the immortals rejoice to meet him in the great beyond.
I unashamedly, unapologetically and personally hold Sir Lester as my mentor. He was a phenomenal athlete, a legendary lawyer, trailblazing Caribbean leader and a giant Statesman. Sir Lester Bird’s contribution to the Nation and people of Antigua is omnipresent in every Antiguan and Barbudan’s life today. Though many of our young may take his works for granted, theirs and the life style they enjoy today has much to do with the vision and accomplishments of Sir Lester. He was a bright star of guidance in dark sky of wilderness that was the post sugar and pre tourism era.
We are truly grateful for the opportunity to have known and been a part of Sir Lester’s life. Indeed, I treasure having been afforded an opportunity to make a personal contribution to serve this Nation under his leadership.
Please Lady Patricia, accept the sincere and heartfelt condolences of my entire family as you and your family navigate this most difficult time.
Respectfully
Asot Michael
